13 Reasons Why fans, listen up.

The fruits of your Netflix binge don’t have to end with season 2’s controversial finale. Dylan Minnette, the lead actor of 13 Reasons Why, has taken his artistic talents beyond the big screen. Alongside two fellow young actors Braeden Lemasters and Cole Preston, Minnette helped form the Los Angeles based indie rock band Wallows.

While plenty of modern actors and actresses have leveraged their Hollywood prowess to launch a career as pop artists (Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, etc.), the members of Wallows are staying true to their perceived beatnik roots. Their natural garage rock style may not be peppy and designed for a mass audience, but their matter-of-fact romanticism is intensely real in its calmness and uncertainty. Minnette expressed that their style has garnered a lot of comparisons with The Strokes, telling Paper Magazine that, “The Strokes or bands like that are definitely within our blood. With ‘Pictures of Girls’ that just came out, I expected the immediate comparisons to be The Strokes.”

Despite being led by a few authentic television & film personalities, Wallows is anything but a side project. Their debut EP Spring peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and number 15 on the Billboard Vinyl chart, while “Pictures of Girls” came in at number 40 on Billboard’s Alternative songs airplay chart. Lemasters spoke about their dedication to music in the same interview with Paper, saying “It’s not actors gone bad, it’s like we’ve always been playing…I definitely spend most of my time thinking about music and listening to music and really, I can see myself in music more than anything acting.” Nothing will prove their dedication better than the test of time, but as long as music continues to come as easy to these three as acting does, they shouldn’t have any trouble maintaining a strong underground fan-base.
